Narrations, Lists, and Rearrangements.

Sometimes I have a tendency to develop habits that characters in books or movies possess.

For example, after seeing “Stranger than Fiction”, in my head I narrated everything I saw with a British accent. This was not on purpose, mind you; it was just the way my mind functioned at the time. It still happens occasionally, especially if I watch something very poetic or ironic.

I watched someone walk down the hallway in high school once and thought something that sounded a bit like this:

“Andrea then turned the corner, brushing her shoulder-length reddish-brown from her face in one graceful sweep. Tucking her art folder under her arm, she proceeded to the water fountain. She drank deeply, as if dehydrated, appearing to savor each individual drop as it slid down her throat.”

I am not kidding.

After reading and watching “High Fidelity”, I made lists. Lots and lots of lists. Also, I did not do this consciously. Believe me when I say it just happened.

Friends would comment on vacations and I would automatically think, “Top 5 vacation spots!”

5. Grand Canyon - It was sooooo pretty. Hiking, squirrels who begged to be fed, heat without humidity, the terror of imminent death with one false step… It was great.

4. Lido Key, Florida - my recently deceased puppy’s namesake. This was my family’s vacation spot for years. Located on the Gulf, it has beautiful water and is great for finding sand dollars and shark teeth. This is where I touched a baby tiger shark that someone had caught while fishing right outside of my hotel.

3. Holiday Valley - beautiful ski resort located in adorable Ellicottville, New York.

2. Kelleys Island - ‘nuff said.

1. Deer Valley/Park City - Utah! Location of the 2002 Winter Olympics. I had a wonderful weekend skiing in the Rockies with my family. The first day, unfortunately, was horrible because I thought it would be a great idea to use snowblades instead of skis. NOTE TO ALL: DO NOT USE SNOWBLADES WHILE SKIING IN THE ROCKIES. You will be blown back up the hill. I spent the rest of the weekend on skis and it was great.

I also developed a habit of reorganizing my DVDs like the main character rearranged his records. I sorted them by color, by order of purchase, by least favorite to most favorite, to finally settling on A-Z followed by seasons of TV shows. I also try to reorganize my room at least once a quarter.

So, beware! If you watch “Stranger than Fiction” or “High Fidelity”, you just might fall into the same ruts as I have. Narrations, lists, and rearrangements.
